Abstract

Pragmatic awareness and communicative competence are essential components of successful second language learning. While grammatical knowledge enables learners to construct correct sentences, pragmatic competence allows them to use language appropriately in different social and cultural contexts. This article explores the relationship between pragmatic awareness and communicative competence in second language acquisition. The study examines the major components of pragmatic competence, including speech acts, politeness strategies, and contextual understanding. It also analyzes the difficulties faced by second language learners in developing pragmatic skills and discusses effective pedagogical approaches for improving communicative interaction. The findings demonstrate that pragmatic instruction significantly contributes to learners’ communicative effectiveness, intercultural understanding, and overall language proficiency. Therefore, pragmatic competence should be integrated into modern language teaching methodologies to prepare learners for authentic communication in multilingual environments.
